Getting Some Bass Fishing In

Have no fear everyone, I have been out fishing a little bit.  I am just getting to blog about the times out now.  My wife got her knee operated on two weeks ago.  I know what you are all thinking.  Did she not know it was fishing season???  Really, I do not think she knew   Just kidding honey   I have been doing my best to take care of her and things around the house while she is recuperating.  Yes, the house is still standing and the kids and dog have been fed.

I have been able to get out fishing a little bit as of late.  Last week, Glenn, Chris, and I went to the Oromocto River to try some bass and pickerel fishing. We put in at the campground on French Lake that connects to the river system.  As soon as we arrived we realized the water levels were actually very high.  We thought since it was a pretty easy winter that the levels would have been lower.  We went up the river system stopping where we thought there should be some bass.  There are many downed trees that sit in the water on this river.  We did not have any luck at all on the river for bass all day long.  Since this was happening, we decided to to some little inlets to see if there were any pickerel sitting in the weeds or grass.  This was the middle of May so there were not many weeds yet but there was a little grass growing in places.  We found this one inlet and we fished it for a little bit.  We each caught a few little pickerel and then decided to keep going up the system. On the way back down we decided to try this place again.  Chris was on fire using a bubblegum colored senko.  Before we left the inlet he caught the two biggest pickerel of the day.  Glenn and I were happy to watch and take pictures   I would say it will be a good three weeks before the water drops to good levels to fish for bass properly.  Perhaps they were not even in the system yet?  We are fairly new to this river and have lots to learn about it.

It was quite a slow day fishing-wise but it was great to spend  the afternoon on the water with Glenn and Chris.

This past Friday night after work, the three of us decided to walk the Canaan River trying for bass.  Glenn had tried the river a couple of times during the week and had some luck.  It was a great night for fishing as the weather was very nice.  We started at the bridge and made our way down the river until it was close to dark.  Again, it was a slow night fishing.  I caught my first bass of the season, which was nice but we did not get much else besides that.  Again, itr was nice to walk the river.  The water level was good.  We were able to walk it with ease.

Glenn and I went back to the same spot Sunday morning.  We arrived at 6am and we fished until 8:30 as Glenn had to be home.  We did not see any fish at all.  The water levels dropped a bit from Friday night.  Glenn and I tried different baits but mainly stayed with top-water lures.  When I got home I texted Glenn to see if he wanted to go back for an evening fish.  I told him we should try the other spot a little farther down the system……and boy am I glad we did.  This stretch is deeper than at the bridge area.  We got in the water and started walking down the river, each taking a side.  Again, we both used top-water poppers.  Along this stretch of the river we each caught 4 bass.  All eight bass were quite small but we were both very happy just to finally get into some bass.  We continued down the river and talked to a guy who was fishing from sure.  As we got closer he asked if I was the guy who did the blog.  He said I looked familiar.  I thought that was pretty cool.  We talked for a bit and then we continued down the river.  It was on this stretch that we finally got into some nice-sized bass.  We each caught two of these bass.  We both really enjoy fishing top water baits because you get to see the bass hit the baits.  It was getting dark by this time so we fished back up river a little bit and then walked back to the car.

It is my experience that the bass stay in this stretch of river until the end of June, so we hope to fish it a handful more times before that date.  This was definitely our best night of bass fishing so far.  We each ended up catching 7 bass each.
