Glenn and I decided to go for an evening of bass fishing last Sunday. ( I have been busy with school…so posting now). I told him I had some bass flies so we decided to just use the fly rods and see how we make out with them. I bought the bass flies quite awhile ago but never used. We thought it would be a good night to try. I had a variety of them but had two of the same popper. Glenn used it first but I decided to use a top water mouse. He started to get a few hits but no takers. ON my side of the river I was not getting any actions so I decided to put the popper on as well. It was not long after that I started to see some movement. I must say it was not difficult to fly fish with these flies but they are heavier than regular flies so it did take a handful of casts to get use to the action and distance. With the popper fly you just cast it out and grab the line with your other hand and pull back on the line to make the fly move towards you on top of the water. I was very impressed with the action it made. Here is a picture of the fly. This is the link to the online store I bought them from. The next day Glenn and i bought more from them. They are in the mail now. I do support local fly tying places but see no harm in buying online either. The online store is The Angler’s Dream. Give them a visit. I recommend trying some of their flies. ON their menu bar at the top, you select what type of flies you want to look at.
It was not long that I had my first bass on. It was not big but it had been 3 or 4 years since I caught a bass using a fly rod. Trust me, it is great fun!!!! We continued down the river and I caught a few more, while Glenn was getting many chasers but no takers. It was around this time that I saw a little mound of dirt with a bush on it and thought it would be a great place for a bass to be hiding. I casted the fly but there was no movement. I casted again and BAMB!!!! I had on a very nice bass. It certainly took my drag I few times. It felt great on the fly rod. It did a few jumps out of the water. Glenn was a bit in front of me. When I got it out of the water I asked Glenn to come take a picture. My the time he got to me, my arm was tired from holding the bass. I was very pleased with the catch. See picture for details
As we moved down the river we each caught a few more. We were both very pleased that we decided to try the fly rods. The Canaan River is a great place to fly fish because it is wide open.
Another very neat part about the night was that we must have passed a thousand shad that were in the system. We tried to catch some using different flies but we did not have any luck. It was very cool to be able to get as close to them as we did.
If you ever have a catch to go bass fishing on the fly….I strongly recommend it!! Happy fishing and tight lines everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read this blog. I appreciate it.
