My friend Glenn and I decided to go to French Lake yesterday for some pickerel fishing.  He has never fished at the lake before.  I have fished there a handful of times during the summer months.  With this being the first time for me fishing here fairly early in the season I certainly learned something.  That something was…man was the water ever high!  I guess I did not think the water here would have been affected as much as other places, so at least I learned something new :)

I also need to say that my camera was not working right.  When ever I put new batteries in, the camera turns on and then off right away.  I have tried many different types of batteries so I guess it is time for a new camera :(   I was hoping to take some pictures of the water level to post.  For the people who fish here a lot, we go through the different channels to fish for the pickerel.  We could not do this yesterday because there were no channels.  All the land was under water.  All of it!!  The water was up about three feet on the trees.  Glenn and I joked that we were boating over land and trying to catch fish there as well.

The wind was up as usual here, which made the main channel very rough.  We got off of that part ASAP and fished along covered areas.  The water was much calmer here.  We got as close to the shallow water as possible.  The fishing was a little tricky because we were fishing in the alder bushes and broken branches.  We did get hung up some but not too bad.  We saw some pickerel going after some bait fish but we did not have a great deal of success.  We each landed two pickerel on the day and had a handful more case our lures.  We tried different baits.  I mainly stuck to the red and oink senkos.

I am use to catching 20 to 30 pickerel during a day of fishing at French Lake.  I am hoping the water will drop over the next few weeks and will give it another try very soon.  I would suggest waiting awhile before trying it.  Hopefully while I am waiting to get back here I will be able to try some over spots that are not affected as much by the high waters this year. Here’s also hoping I get a new camera before the next fishing day as well.
